The Biggest Indonesia Tsunami Strikes at Krakatau Without Warning Kills 222 People, Hundreds Injured

The disaster management agency has warned people to stay far from the coastline because of fears of anothertsunami. Saturday's Indonesia Tsunami  struck at about 21:30 time (14:30GMT), throughout a local vacation. It hit many popular tourist destinations as well as the Tanjung Lesung beach resort within the west of Java island.

It is rumbling for months, cutting the pillars of superheated ash and lava ribbons flowing in currents among the most populated islands of Indonesia. Under the full moon, beach parties were in full swing. Those traveling on Christmas Holiday were eating late in the seaside restaurant on the western edge of Java Island.

Then - 20 minutes after the latest explosion of the Indonesia Tsunami at Anak Krakatau - the sea rose up without warning, possibly shaking with a water underwater landslide from volcanic activity. Roared ashore a wall of water, which sits everything in its path: boats, tables, people.

A sad year for Indonesia added more death and misery. At least 222 people were counted on dead Sunday - officials estimated that the number could increase because disaster teams were deployed in villages and coves with Suda Strait, about 60 miles away from Jakarta.

Indonesia's Disaster Management Agency, which announced the death toll, said that about 850 people were injured due to the tsunami, which was hit by deadly theft with water between Java and Sumatra on Saturday night.

Scientists, including scientists from Indonesia's Meteorological and Geophysics Agency, said on Sunday that the tsunami could be due to landslides or the volcanic eruption could be due to the explosion on the ground on the steady slope of Anak Krakatau.

In the dramatic video posted on social media, Indonesian pop band Seventeen was shown performing under a tent on a popular beach in a concert for employees of a state-owned power company. Dozens of people kept listening to the table covered in white clothes, while others stuck on the music tunes near the stage, as well as the attractive strobe lights and dramatic smoke left.

Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau) is a new island that emerged in 1927 from Krakatoa volcano. In August 1883, Krakatoa underwent one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in recorded history:

• Massive tsunamis with waves up to 135ft (41m) killed more than 30,000 people
• Thousands more were killed by hot ash
• The eruptions were equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT - about 13,000 times the nuclear yield of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945
• The eruptions were heard thousands of kilometers away
• World temperatures dropped by more than 1C the following year
• The volcanic island virtually disappeared

"Actually, the tsunami was not really big, only one meter," said Prasetya, who has closely studied Krakatoa. "The problem is people always tend to build everything close to the shoreline."

In September, more than 2,500 people were killed by an earthquake and tsunami that hit the city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi, east of Borneo.

Saturday's Indonesia Tsunami also rekindled memories of the massive magnitude 9.1 earthquake that hit Indonesia on Dec. 26, 2004. It spawned a giant tsunami off Sumatra island, killing more than 230,000 people in more than a dozen countries — the majority in Indonesia.
